Volkswagen pulling the plug on the R32 for the USA

Written by auto on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 in auto.

Volkswagen announced the U.S. will no longer be receiving the hottest version of the Rabbit/Golf/GTI known as the R32. Although this car found a home with many wannabe racers, it was likely hard for Volkswagen to sell a $33,000 hatchback that didn’t look too different from the $16,000 VW Rabbit. One hope is that the the 250 hp all-wheel drive hot hatch will return to these shores when the new Golf VI comes to the US market possibly before the end of 2009.

Ford selling Volvo to BMW?

Written by auto on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 in auto.

Ford selling Volvo to BMW?
In the fire sale that is the U.S. automotive industry, everything is up for grabs. One of the easiest companies for Ford to peel off right now is Volvo. The Sunday Times in London first broke the story that BMW is in serious negotiation with Ford for the Swedish carmaker. BMW has since put out its own statement denying the report. But that’s how the merger tango goes: tight lips until the deal is done.Volvo seems like the next logical cash cow. Unlike General Motors’ possible Hummer sale, Volvo seems to have a diverse brand that has some current demand attached to it. Earlier this month, it was also rumored that Ford may sell off its interest in Mazda, but that would be more difficult than Volvo. (Read the full post about ‘Ford selling Volvo to BMW?’…)

Toyota thinks big on baby iQ
Auto Express Car Reviews 28th October 2008 Cramming four seats into the three-metre-long iQ was a result of clever design, Toyota has said as it revealed first details of the car’s mechanicals. The gearbox differential, for example, was placed in front of the engine, not behind it – reducing the front overhang and the iQ’s length! Scheider seals DTM success
Auto Express Car Reviews By James Disdale28th October 2008 Audi ace Timo Scheider took the DTM championship in style last weekend with victory in the season finale at Hockenheim, Germany. The young German held off a strong challenge from the Mercedes of arch-rival Paul di Resta in the middle stint of the race, before pulling out a three-second gap at the flag. Di Resta’s charge was initially delayed by 2007 champion Mattias Ekstrom, who held up the Scot on the opening lap by running his Audi A4 wide in turns two and three. The Swede was later given a stop-go penalty for lining up outside his grid lines at the start. (Read the full post about ‘Scheider seals DTM success’…)

GM received 6000 orders for the new Camaro

Written by auto on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 in auto.

General Motors announced that it has already received 6000 orders for the new 2010 Camaro. This impressive considering that first cars won’t even hit the streets until the first quarter of 2009. The large presale may make GM rethink its initial annual run of 20,000 Camaros.

From all the orders 84% are for the V8 equipped SS version. We can only hope that this interest in V8s may make Chevrolet reconsider a special run for the Camaro Z28.

The Camaro SS is equipped with a 6.2-liter V-8 making between 400 hp (automatic) and 422 hp (manual) depending on transmission. The 3.6-liter V6 engine used in the LS and LT trims is rated at 300 hp.
